Try it now. Open ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity and ask the question your best customer would ask before buying. "Best accounting software for a small Indian manufacturer." "Which online MBA is worth it for working professionals?" Read the answer. Are you in it?

For most brands the honest answer is no, even brands that rank well on Google. That gap is new, and it is growing.

Assistants don't rank pages, they assemble answers

A search engine shows a list and lets the buyer choose. An assistant reads widely, decides what is true, and writes one answer. To be in that answer, the assistant has to understand clearly what you are, believe it from more than one source, and judge you relevant to the exact question.

The three reasons brands get left out

  • Unclear identity. Your site says you are "an end-to-end solutions partner". The assistant cannot tell what category you belong to, so it leaves you out.
  • No independent proof. Assistants lean on what others say: reviews, comparisons, press, forums, directories. If the only source describing you is you, you are easy to skip.
  • Content that answers nothing. Pages built for keywords rarely answer the specific, comparative questions buyers now type into assistants.

What changes it

Start by writing down the twenty questions buyers ask on the way to a purchase. Check how each assistant answers them today and which sources it cites. Then fix in order: make your category and audience unmistakable on your own site, earn mentions in the sources assistants already trust, and publish pages that answer the comparative questions directly.

This is slower than buying ads and faster than most people think. The brands that start now will be the default answers in their category for years.
